Irish citizenship

1. Children born in the territory of country regardless of their parents’ legal status; the only exception is if parents decided to retain child’s original nationality;
2. Child born to Irish national, regardless his place of birth;
3. Child born to British national;
4. Child born to Irish resident, who have Permission to remain without condition as to time;
5. Child born to father or mother who legally lived in Ireland for the period of 3 years (residence qualification is not considered to students of higher educational institutions and refugees).

Irish citizenship is acquired automatically by children adopted by Irish nationals.

Foreign national is eligible to apply for Irish citizenship upon 3 years of marriage to Irish national.

Foreign national is eligible for Irish citizenship upon 5 years of living in the country on the basis of residence permit and 3 years of living on the basis of permanent residence under condition of compliance with the Irish legislation.

The time of living on the basis of student visa or refugee status is not considered.

Main requirements for foreign national who wishes to obtain Irish citizenship by naturalization:

1. Age of majority;
2. Be a person of good character;
3. Have clean criminal record (any previous convictions should be mentioned in application);
4. Do not leave the territory of Ireland for 1-year period upon citizenship application is submitted;
5. Be a permanent resident of Ireland for 5-year period (do not leave the country for more than 6 months during 9-year period);
6. Confirm the sincerity of intentions to live in Ireland and obtain its citizenship;
7. Swear an oath of loyalty to Ireland and its citizens.

In exceptional cases the President of the country may grant a citizenship in case an alien made indelible contributions to the development of Ireland and its society (considered on an individual basis). 

1. Persons with Irish origin or who have blood relatives of Irish nationality;
2. Foreign nationals who serve the best interests of minor child;
3. Foreign nationals married to Irish national (the required period of stay is reduced to 3 years);
4. Foreign nationals who are in public service outside the country;
5. Persons with refugee status in Ireland (the required period of stay is reduced to 3 years).

• Copy of national passport;
• Copy of international passport;
• Document confirming the absence of criminal record in the territory of Ireland and abroad;
• Marriage certificate or divorce certificate(if any);
• Autobiography of the applicant;
• Medical report on the mental health of the applicant, as well as on the absence of chronic diseases and diseases dangerous to others;
• 4 photographs.

It is not necessary to renounce original nationality upon acquiring Irish citizenship. The government of Ireland recognizes dual citizenship.
