Permanent residence is a document, which entitles a foreigner with all the same rights that Portuguese citizens have, except the right to vote and be elected. Permanent residence permit holder can travel to Schengen countries without visa and other supplementary documents.
The following categories of persons can apply for permanent residence:
- Aliens who came to the country under employment programme and legally residing in it for at least 5 years;
- Aliens who came to the country for educational purpose. Foreign national can apply for permanent residence upon graduation if he resided permanently in the country.
- Foreign national can apply for permanent residence on the basis of marriage with Portuguese national or resident upon 3 years of marital relations;
- Foreign nationals who have their own business in the territory of Portugal under condition of creation of at least ten job positions;
- Foreign nationals who invest in country’s economy;
- Refugees;
- Family reunification.
In is necessary to prepare the set of documents carefully for permanent residence:
- Apply to SEF for permanent residence;
- Provide CAPLE (A2) proficiency certificate in Portuguese as a foreign language;
- Provide evidences that foreigner has a stable and legal income;
- Provide documents from the social insurance and tax authorities;
- International passport.
