Danish citizenship

As of 2018, obtaining the citizenship of Denmark is considered one of the most difficult procedures in Europe. In order to get the passport of the country a foreign national is obliged to reside in it for the minimum period of 9 years (with some exceptions). Excellent knowledge of Danish language, country’s culture, history and legislation is also required.

Danish citizenship acquired automatically by:

  • Minors under 18 years of age if their parents are Danish nationals (regardless of place of birth);
  • Children, adopted by Danish nationals.

Children born to foreign nationals in Denmark are not eligible for Danish citizenship.

Foreign national who wishes to obtain Danish citizenship by naturalization is obliged to reside in the country for the minimum period of 9 years. The exceptions are:

  • The length of stay in the country for Danish graduates who are officially employed is 5 years;
  • The length of stay in the country for alien married to Danish national is 6 years;
  • The length of stay in the country for refugees legally residing in Denmark is 8 years.

In order to obtain Danish passport an alien must meet the following requirements:
  • Pass the Danish citizen test (ndfødsretsprøven) by answering 32 questions out of 40 relating to national culture, history and laws;
  • Pass the Danish proficiency test (Prøve i Dansk) and achieve the 3 level of proficiency or higher;
  • Prove financial independence. For this it is required to be officially employed four and a half of the last five years with salary not less that the established minimum or be a business holder in Denmark, without material support from the state within the last year.
  • Have no tax arrears and credit debts;
  • Have a clean criminal record and absence of administrative offences. If this condition is not fulfilled, the period for citizenship acquiring may be increased from 3 to 20 years.

Upon successful completion of procedures an alien is required to pledge his allegiance to the crown of Denmark and pay the government fee in amount of kr 1000.

The Kingdom of Denmark recognizes dual citizenship since 2015, therefore, it is not necessary to renounce the citizenship of the native country.
