Permanent residence in Austria

1. Spouses live together for at least a year, with one of them living not less than 4 years in Austria;
2. Spouses live together for at least two years, with one of them living at least 3 years in Austria.

In other cases, permanent residence is granted after five years of legal residence in Austria.

• German language proficiency with at least B1 level. The certificate is included in the list of documents required for permanent residence obtaining;
• An individual must provide a document stating stable and legal monthly income (minimum €1 452).
• Health insurance which fully covers all the health needs.
• A candidate for permanent residence should have sincere affection for Austrian culture and traditions.

Documents submitted for permanent residence in Austria should be translated into German by licensed bureau.

The list of main documents:

• Applicant’s birth certificate;
• Valid international passport;
• Photo not older than 6 months from the time application;
• Marriage certificate (if any);
• Higher education diploma (if any);
• Certificate of criminal records;
• A document confirming the availability of dwelling (purchased or leased);
• A document confirming stable and legal income.
• Language proficiency certificate;
• Health insurance.

The list of documents is adaptable depending on the situation and the status of the applicant.

Every foreigner who is not an EU citizen is obliged to sign an “Integration Agreement” for compulsory attendance of German language courses for 2 years, with an aim of better integration into the Austrian society.
